STEP 1
What do you want to do?
Make a few notes of what you would like to do. If you are unsure, spend some time researching what you like. Houzz, Instagram and Google images are good places to start. What kind of tile do you like? I recommended making a folder to save images and designs that you can share. A general concept of the project puts us on the right track to getting you an estimate.
You may also go to a distributor with a showroom like Contract Furnishings Mart (CFM). Here you can look at samples in person. CFM can also begin a file for you and share it with us.
STEP 2
Determine if you need a tile contractor or general contractor.
If there is any other work to be done aside from tile installation (framing, plumbing, electrical etc.) then you may need a general contractor to arrange and coordinate these trades. You may also act as your own GC but keep in mind this can be a full time job for the duration of the project. I can also refer you to one if needed.
If you determine that you do not need a GC, please move onto Step 3.
STEP 3
Request an estimate, Schedule the project
It’s at this point we can schedule a site visit. If you are still in the tile selection process that is understandable. I am happy to discuss concepts and designs with you. I can provide you a general labor estimate but it will not be accurate until we have a final design and tile selection. The final design will also provide us with the needed tile quantities for a tile quote.
The labor estimate will include all labor and materials except for the tile. The tile is directly paid for by the client thru the distributor.
Many tile selections will not be in stock and will need to be shipped. This can take weeks so it is always good to know the “lead” times before purchasing.
When we have the tile availability date, we can develop a familiar plan and schedule your project.
STEP 4
Installation and Completion
Once the tile is available and the scheduled date arrives, the process begins. It is helpful if you reserve a designated 10’x10’ minimum space for staging tools and materials. A patio or garage works well but the closer to the project area, the more efficient and less intrusive.
The installation process usually includes these four steps:
Prep- floor treatments, waterproofing of showers etc.
Tile Installation- installing the design
Grouting- As we see the tile in its final area and light, we can select a color.
Curing- a specified amount of time needed before the area can be used. (usually 12-48 hours)
